Former College Football Player Kevin Plank Designs Athletic Gear For All Seasons

Kevin Plank is an American entrepreneur and a CEO of his own company in Baltimore, Maryland. He is a co-founder and chairman of Under Armour. From early on in his college days, Kevin had the business savvy to identify an opportunity and profit from its successful outcome.

Under Armour is a leader in the apparel industry. It is one of the largest clothing companies today. Kevin has been recognized by Forbes as one of the most powerful CEOs under the age of 40. When Kevin was a college student, he decided to start a flower delivery service on campus. He ran his tiny start-up business out of his dorm over Valentine’s Day, and his initiative earned him $17,000. Kevin was a student and a football player at the University of Maryland. This kind of entrepreneurial thinking was only the beginning of what was to come in the career of Kevin Plank.

Kevin Plank started his company to provide a better option for the fabric used for sports gear, particularly the items that he and the other football players wore under their uniforms. His idea grew upon the need for more absorbency. Kevin went on the road with his samples to introduce his apparel line. He started with the University of Maryland team, and the response was positive. Kevin Plank was now in the apparel business, and the Under Armour name is well known across the country. The 1996 debut of Kevin’s ”The Shorty” was a huge success, His vision was to create a T-shirt that protects football players when they are soaked with sweat regardless of the outdoor temperature.

Kevin Plank has since added numerous other products to his clothing line, including the ColdGear, HeatGear and AllSeasonGear sportswear. A lot of the early success of his company was formed with the help of word-of-mouth marketing. As a new business owner, Kevin learned the importance of listening to hear what his customers want.
